How to add an email signature in the Gmail app on Android

Straight answer first: you can't paste a designed signature into the Gmail app on Android. Its “mobile signature” is text only: no logo, no colours, no clickable icons. The good news: set the full signature in Gmail on the web and the app can fall back to it.

Step by step

5 steps
  1. 1

    Step 01 / 05

Set up the full signature on the web

Follow the Gmail guide on a computer. Every email you send from Gmail in a browser then carries your full signature with logo and links.

  2. 2

    Step 02 / 05

    Open the app settings

In the Gmail app, tap the menu ☰ top left, scroll to the bottom and tap Settings. Then tap the account you want to set up.

  3. 3

    Step 03 / 05

    Decide: empty or text

Tap Mobile signature. Google's help says that if you don't set one, new messages from the app use the signature you created on your computer. So the simplest option is to leave it empty.

  4. 4

    Step 04 / 05

Or type a short text version

Prefer a compact mobile sign-off? Type plain text, for example name, role and phone number on separate lines, and tap OK. That text then replaces the full signature for mail sent from the app.

  5. 5

    Step 05 / 05

    Send a test

Send a new email from the app to another address and check what arrives. Behaviour for replies can differ from new messages.

P.S. Good to know

  • Whatever you type in Mobile signature is plain text: links won't be clickable buttons and images aren't possible.
  • Gmail on the web always uses your rich signature, whatever you set in the app.
  • Using Samsung Email or Outlook for Android instead? Look for Signature in that app's own settings; how much formatting survives varies per app.

Not working?

The most common problems, and what to do about them.

Why can't I paste my designed signature?

The Gmail app's mobile signature field only stores plain text. That's a Gmail limitation, not something we or you can fix.

Will people see my logo when I email from my phone?

Only if the mobile signature is empty and Gmail falls back to your computer signature. If you typed a mobile signature, they get that text instead. Send yourself a test to be sure.

How do I remove the mobile signature?

Open Mobile signature, clear the text and tap OK.

No signature yet?

Make one in two minutes.

Free, no account, no watermark. Copy it and paste it into Android (Gmail app) with the steps above.
