Email signature for designers

Clients judge your eye by your signature. That's unfair, but true. So make it look intentional, and make it work in every inbox.

Packaging – three directions

Hi Mei,

Three packaging directions are in the attached PDF. My favourite is the second one, but I'm curious which one you'd pick up from the shelf.

Kind regards,

Why it matters

What your signature needs to do

  1. 01

    Restraint reads as skill

One accent colour, one weight for your name, generous spacing. A tidy signature shows taste faster than a busy one.

  2. 02

Don't make it one big image

A signature exported as a single PNG looks perfect in your own mail app and broken elsewhere: blocked images, blurry on sharp screens, no clickable links and unreadable for screen readers. Use real text, and keep images for your photo or logo.

  3. 03

Your portfolio is the call to action

The most useful link a designer can add is to recent work. Point it at a curated page, not your entire archive.

Include

What to include

  • Name and discipline (e.g. 'Brand & packaging designer')
  • A link to a curated portfolio page
  • One platform where your work lives (Instagram, Behance or Dribbble)
  • Your brand colour as the accent
  • Studio name, if you have one

Leave out

What to leave out

  • Custom web fonts: most email clients swap them for Arial anyway
  • A signature made of one big image
  • Every social platform you've ever signed up to

Large photo and editorial type. Feels like a byline in a design magazine.

A solid band of colour with your name. Strong, if your brand colour is.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my own font in my email signature?

You can set one, but most email clients, including Gmail and Outlook, replace custom web fonts with a fallback such as Arial. Design your signature so it still looks good in Arial or Georgia.

Why not just design my signature as one image?

Some email clients block images by default, they can look blurry on high-resolution screens, they can't be clicked or read by screen readers and are sometimes shown as attachments. Real text is more reliable.

Which links should a designer include?

A portfolio page and at most one or two platforms where your work lives. Every extra icon makes the important link less likely to be clicked.
