Email signature for students

Applying for an internship or emailing a lecturer? A tidy signature shows you take it seriously. It doesn't need to make you look older than you are.

Why it matters

What your signature needs to do

  1. 01

    Honest beats impressive

'CEO' of a project you started last month, or 'Consultant' without clients, is easy to spot and makes recruiters wonder what else is stretched. 'Business student, year 3' is perfectly fine.

  2. 02

    Help recruiters plan

Your expected graduation date tells employers when you're available. That's the first thing they need to know for internships and graduate roles.

  3. 03

    Show one thing you've made

A LinkedIn profile or a single portfolio link gives people a reason to look beyond your CV.

Include

What to include

  • Your name and study programme
  • University or college
  • Expected graduation (month and year)
  • LinkedIn or one portfolio link
  • What you're looking for, if you're applying (e.g. 'Looking for a UX internship')

Leave out

What to leave out

  • Made-up titles like 'Founder' or 'CEO'
  • Your student number
  • Quotes, emoji and a party photo as your picture

Classic

#01

A photo, your programme and the essentials. Grown-up without trying too hard.

Frequently asked questions

Do students need an email signature?

Not for every email, but when you apply for internships, contact companies or email lecturers, it helps. It looks organised and puts your LinkedIn one click away.

University email or a personal one?

For anything study-related, your university address shows you're a real student. For job applications a simple personal address (firstname.lastname@…) is fine, and you'll keep it after graduating.

Can I call myself 'Founder' if I have a side project?

If it's a real business with customers, sure. Otherwise describe it honestly, e.g. 'Building a recipe app on the side'. Recruiters appreciate that more than a big title.
